We all know that eating a healthy diet is a great way to maintain a healthy weight and give your body all of the nutrients it needs to work as effectively as possible, but you may be surprised at some of the other things a healthy diet can do for you…
1. Boost your mood
There is a much stronger relationship between mood and food than many of us realize. That’s because our moods are controlled by neurotransmitters that are produced in the brain. These neurotransmitters are made up of amino acids which they tale from the food we eat, so by eating a healthy varied diet, we can allow them to do their job and make us feel the way we should.
2. Protect your hearing
Yes, diet can help your ears. If you eat a healthy diet that is packed with magnesium, zinc, potassium, B12, and a bunch of other important vitamins and minerals, you are less likely to experience hearing loss than if you eat a diet that is low in the very same nutrients. Obviously, it isn’t the whole solution for hearing issues and you will need to limit the amount of exposure you have to loud noises and things like that but a healthy diet really can help, more than you might expect.
3. Better quality of sleep
Many of the most unhealthy foods we eat can have a negative impact on our ability to sleep. For example, sodas that contain caffeine and sugary treats are both well-known causes of temporary sleep problems. By changing your diet to include less of these things and more of the things that will help you sleep like tryptophan and magnesium, you can vastly improve the quality of your sleep.
4. Maintain healthy veins
Most of us don’t really think very much about our veins, but of course, they are extremely important for our continued health, transporting blood and nutrients to where they are needed the most. Maintaining a healthy diet and a healthy weight will help to prevent varicose or spider veins from developing, vein collapse, and other nasty things that are much rather avoided.
5. Lengthen your life
Perhaps, one of the biggest benefits of a healthy diet is the fact that it may be able to prolong the length of your life. If you are eating all of the right things, maintaining a healthy weight, and giving your body all of the nutrients you need, you are more likely to be happy, healthy, and active for many more years than you might be if you were to eat a less than optimum diet all your life.
As you can see, eating a healthy diet is about so much more than your waistline, so it is important that you make a real effort to eat as well as you can as often as you can. It’s fine to have the occasional treat, but ideally, fruit, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins should make up the bulk of your diet.
