Megacon 2019

Megacon Orlando and I? We have history.
My first Megacon was in 2014, just a brief month or so after I suffered a miscarriage. I cried the way up to Orlando because I felt guilty for doing something “fun,” but then quickly realized it was just what I needed. The convention scene and I have always been allies, a place I feel safe and at home in. Somewhere where I feel I can be myself without judgement. I had quite a lot of that fun I was feeling guilty for experiencing and met some lifelong friends. For this, it has always stayed in my heart.

It was only natural that Luna’s first convention be Mega, and it was last year. I had my reservations about how she would take it, but she was such a champ. Not many two year olds can say that their first celebrity encounter was Jeff Goldblum while dressed like Queen Elsa. Just sayin’.

5 Fandom Friday: Favorite Theme Park Rides

fandom.5.fridayBrought to you by The Nerdy Girlie & Super Space Chick

Ever since I was a kid I loved visiting theme parks, and living in South Florida made that a pretty easy thing to do since we are only a 3 hour drive from Orlando. An extra hour in the car gets you to Tampa, which houses Busch Gardens, so we were never in short supply of options. As an adult, the love only grows and I’m sure as we grow a family, the love will be reborn in a different and even more special way.

1. The Hulk Coaster {Islands of Adventure}
This is my all time favorite ride at Islands of Adventure. Sure, Wizarding World opened up and all that jive, but this coaster on Marvel Island never lost its magic. Most trips, I find myself either starting with it or running half way across the park from Hogsmeade to make it to The Hulk before the park closes. What makes it so special? That amazing initial launch where you accelerate to 40mph in 2 seconds. It makes you feel like you are flying!

2. Escape from Gringotts {Universal Studios: Orlando}
I used to be obsessed with The Forbidden Journey in the Hogsmeade portion of Wizarding World until Diagon Alley opened up. Then it was quickly replaced by Escape from Gringotts. It is absolutely impossible to not go on this ride and not leave smiling. I personally have a smile slapped on my face the entire time. The technology is amazing, but of course, what takes it to the top of my list is that super fun drop at the beginning. I love that Bellatrix’s curse seems to levitate your cart and actually suspends it at a 40 degree angle before dropping you into a series of intense spins and turns. Such a great way to get your adrenaline pumping!

3. Sheikra Coaster {Busch Gardens: Tampa}
I don’t get to go to Busch Gardens enough, but I love every single visit. As you can tell, I’m a bit of a coaster junkie and love trying new ones (even if I do shake in my boots until it’s over – then I want to ride it again). The last time I went to Busch Gardens, we had some bad weather, which means the brand-spankin’ new coaster, Cheetah Hunt, was closed. However, we were able to go on Sheikra and whoa! Was it a thrill. Standing at 200 feet tall with a max speed of 70 mph, it was daunting to say the least (dear lord, that climb), but so amazingly fun! I can’t wait to visit again and experience that eternal 4 second hang before they drop you those 200 feet.

4. The Haunted Mansion {DisneyLand: California}
You may wonder why I listed The Haunted Mansion in California and not in Orlando, since we have the same attraction, and there is a reason and one reason only: The Nightmare Before Christmas. See, in California, The Haunted Mansion is taken over by Jack Skellington and his friends in honor of Christmas time. This revamp happens from late-September through early-January and the hubs and I just happened to visit during that window last year. I didn’t even know this happened, so needless to say, I was pretty stoked since Nightmare is one of, if not my absolute favorite Disney movie. I squee’d throughout the entire thing, but was pretty disappointed with the merchandise. I think there should be more available during this time at the park, but was sad to see such a measly assortment.

5. Rock n’ Roller Coaster {Hollywood Studios: Orlando}
I had to finish strong with another coaster! This one is at DisneyWorld’s Hollywood Studios and is Aerosmith themed. It’s totally in the dark, so you have no idea what you are riding until you are literally strapped in and on the move. Naturally, this is pretty scary when you finally reach the point you can see the cars (which are made to look like stretch limousines) screeching into a neon tunnel (that would be because they are going from 0 to 57 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds), but at least you have Aerosmith tunes blaring from the speakers on either side of your head to keep you a little calm.

**Honorable mention goes to Expedition Everest at DisneyWorld’s Animal Kingdom park. I just visited the park for the first time last year and rode on this coaster. Sooooooo much fun!

What I Wore: Sassy Witch

On yet another Monday (why do they keep popping up every week?), I figured I’d go back to my happy place for yet another magical outfit post! This one was by far the biggest hit of the weekend – I was proudly waving my Gryffindor flag highly and it showed. I got a bunch of cheers and hisses from some hateful Slytherins. I had been on the hunt for these Gryffindor socks for the longest and they finally had them in stock – needless to say, they were on my feet in no time. Paired with my Swish & Flick sweater and wand (Luna Lovegood’s if you are curious), I was ready to take on any pesky Dementors that crossed my path. Expecto Patronum!

What I Wore: Magical Chic

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I went on a romantical trip with my lovey to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter this past weekend. It was initially going to be Valentine’s Day weekend, but that was until we found it was a long weekend for kiddos: NOPE! We were graced with amazing weather (well, until our last day) and small crowds, making the parks a complete joy to maneuver. We did some serious shopping (look out for my next outfit posts), and just enjoyed each other…and the geekiness all around us. There’s just something geniunely magical about this place. After 4 consecutive days in the parks, I just didn’t want to leave. Now that we have annual passes, it looks like I won’t have to leave for long! Until next month!

With that said, I wanted to make sure I was comfy but still looking the part. This is where my love of leggings begins. They are just so easy, light and versatile. Just make sure to follow one tip: always make sure you are wearing a tunic top. At the end of the day, leggings are NOT pants. Please don’t wear them as such.

Diagon Alley Visit

I hope all of you survived the Mercury Retrograde unscathed. I can’t necessarily say I did, but thankfully I closed it out with a visit to Diagon Alley in Orlando! I had been ridiculously excited to see what they had done with the expansion, and I was not disappointed. The new park is perfection. The best part is, I’m pretty sure we only touched on all the amazing nooks and crannies of the place. I can’t wait to go again and see everything else we missed!

The butterbeer ice cream was probably the only disappointment. Granted, I was downing a frozen butterbeer right before I tasted it, so I don’t know if the two flavors competed with each other, but it just tasted like vanilla ice cream topped with caramel. Pretty bland. Otherwise, everything was on point. Knockturn Alley was a definite highlight of mine. I always mentioned that the deatheaters presence was not made known when we only had Hogsmeade, so I’m really really happy they brought a little darkness to the park. Without it, there would be no Potter.

I also really liked visiting Ollivanders. I feel like their wand selection and quality improved (especially with the new addition of interactive wands). It was a pretty magical experience. We all ended up taking home wands, but it was such a tough decision for all of us. I finally settled on Luna, which brought us all to thinking who we really are in the Potter universe in comparison to who we’d like to be. As much as I admire Hermione and her intelligence, quick wit and independence, I know I am 100% Luna. Quirky, weird, fiercely loyal and loving.

And this is what I wore!
