Geeky Baby Shower: Fandom Elements

IMG_5101

I had my absolutely amazing baby shower last month at Earls in Dadeland Mall. The venue was beyond perfection and the staff even better. But what really made the shower special (aside from all the love in the air), was the little fandom touches I made in decor.I figured I would share these touches with all of you in case you are wondering how you can incorporate some geekiness into more formal events and parties. And yes, I planned and orchestrated my entire baby shower. I’m a control freak and I do what I want. Plus, I think I’m pretty darn good at it. šŸ˜‰

For those of you wondering what I was wearing, my dress was from Dorothy Perkins and all my accessories (including flower hair pins) and shoes were from Forever 21. My entire outfit cost me no more than $80!

I knew I wanted there to be a geeky vibe in decor throughout the shower, but wanted to make sure it was subtle. I decided to go with writing some of my favorite quotes from some of my favorite fandoms on little chalkboard easels or place cards. The easels were from Target, while the chalkboard place cards were from Hobby Lobby. I sharpened up on my chalkboard art skills by looking through Pinterest and copying my favorite designs and layouts. Although time consuming, it was relaxing and I honestly was very surprised with the results. Word to the wise, don’t use regular chalk – a chalk pencil will give you much better lines and control especially if you will be writing/drawing on design elementsĀ as small as mine. Each of these easels or place cards were placed on the tables, along with a mason jar full of baby’s breath and gold-glittered antlers, which were my homage to Hannibal. I finished the centerpiece look with a little gold animal to tie in a childlike element all the while sitting on top of a wooden slab.

Although I could have gone crazy with geekiness, I wanted our shower to be simple and modern. Our venue was already very aesthetically pleasing to my style so I let it speak for itself. However, all the fellow geeks in attendance definitely took note of what I incorporated, which is exactly what I was hopingĀ for and everyone else just found the quotes sweet. Overall, it was an awesome day with awesome people that I will cherish forever!

What I Wore | Beach Shower

Dress; Harajuku Lovers via Plato’s Closet
Belt; Marshall’s
Sandals; Enzo Angiolini via Nordstrom Rack
Bracelets; gifted
Earrings; Old Navy
Sunglasses; JCPenny

I remember a few years back when I had what seemed like back-to-back weddings every month. Well, now things have shifted and we are at the stage where it is one baby shower after the other. I’m not going to lie, I’m not a fan. OK, so I usually groan when I receive an invitation to one. However, I really appreciate when a couple understands what makes a baby shower downright boring and try their best to do the complete opposite. Cue one of my oldest friends, Camero. She knows what’s up.

Weekend Highlights

Friday night both the hubs and I met with friends for dinner at Smoke’t BBQ in South Miami. I had only heard great reviews of the place so I was really excited. Something else that made me really excited? The fact that it is one of the only places in South Florida that carries Rogue’s Dead Guy Ale on draft. Sold! My only beef with the place was their parking situation – it was entirely too cramped causing me to resort to metered parking (which I hate with a passion). However, otherwise, I had a great night – not only due to the food, of course, but to the company as well. I had the BBQ Pork Redneck Rolls, which simulate a sushi roll and are way more delicious and way less disgusting than they sound. I paired the rolls with their jalapeno mac ‘n cheese and was pretty sure I had died and gone to lactose heaven. The hubs decided he wanted to risk a mild heart attack and try the chicken and waffles. Although I didn’t give it a whirl, he seemed pretty satisfied – as did all the other boys that ordered the same. I can definitely see myself going back in the future to watch a game or just have a great time catching up with friends over some quality beer and food.

1. Eat Drink Chic

As you all know, I check a series of blogs on a regular basis to gather inspiration and keep up to date with what’s hot and what’s not. Unfortunately, This week it has been a little tough for me to keep up with my long list of favorite blogs, but I was lucky enough to stumble on one new favorite: Eat Drink Chic! The creator of this blog, Amy, is a graphic designer from Australia that states that the blog is “an exploration of style,” allowing her to experiment with wearing different hats. Not only are her posts beautiful, enjoyable and fun, but I definitely find her feelings towards her blog mirror my own towards Melificent. I can only hope my blog can be as wonderful as hers in the near future!
