Megacon 2019

Megacon Orlando and I? We have history.
My first Megacon was in 2014, just a brief month or so after I suffered a miscarriage. I cried the way up to Orlando because I felt guilty for doing something “fun,” but then quickly realized it was just what I needed. The convention scene and I have always been allies, a place I feel safe and at home in. Somewhere where I feel I can be myself without judgement. I had quite a lot of that fun I was feeling guilty for experiencing and met some lifelong friends. For this, it has always stayed in my heart.

It was only natural that Luna’s first convention be Mega, and it was last year. I had my reservations about how she would take it, but she was such a champ. Not many two year olds can say that their first celebrity encounter was Jeff Goldblum while dressed like Queen Elsa. Just sayin’.

Life with Luna: Strangeways Studio {+ GIVEAWAY}

swsheadpic

I think I have to keep my eyes peeled because someone is trying to steal my job. Namely, little baby Luna is getting way too good at these ootd’s. She’s such a ham, and although she hates getting dressed these days (you would think I was killing her!), she has a blast grinning for the camera. Definitely my daughter. 😉

All of you know that I’m a fan of shopping small whenever I can, and that I adore finding fandom related outfits for the babe. This can be super hard to do, especially if you are trying to remain on budget. This is why I am totally obsessed with StrangeWays Studio. I personally think they have the best selection of fandom onesies out there that won’t break your bank in half. And it doesn’t hurt that the majority of their inventory are for fandoms I absolutely adore. Potter? Parks & Rec? Doctor Who? Yeah, sign me up.

You may remember a much tinier Luna showcasing their stuff on the blog before, and we are just as in love a few months later. I can’t recommend their soft and stretchy onesies enough. Luna is currently sporting their 6-12 month size and I can see her wearing them for a very long time. They hold up to multiple wears and washes very well too, which is important.

Badge Brigade

IMG_0439

I hope all of you had a fun and safe Halloween!

Unless you have been hiding under a rock, you know that badges (or buttons) are all the rage when it comes to geek fashion these days. It’s such a fun way to add a little fangirl touch to any outfit and make your fandoms known without screaming from the hilltops (unless you are into that sort of thing, then by all means, go ahead). Since I’m such a big fan of vests, I’ve really taken to the whole badge trend to make them a little more fun and kitschy. However, what I love the most about badges is that they will bring a pop to your wardrobe without breaking the bank. Most badges are very affordable, while the more custom pieces can still be purchased at reasonable prices (while supporting indie creators). I find new artists and shops all the time with great ones, so I figured I would round them all up in one place for you guys!

Geeky Baby Shower: Fandom Elements

IMG_5101

I had my absolutely amazing baby shower last month at Earls in Dadeland Mall. The venue was beyond perfection and the staff even better. But what really made the shower special (aside from all the love in the air), was the little fandom touches I made in decor.I figured I would share these touches with all of you in case you are wondering how you can incorporate some geekiness into more formal events and parties. And yes, I planned and orchestrated my entire baby shower. I’m a control freak and I do what I want. Plus, I think I’m pretty darn good at it. 😉

For those of you wondering what I was wearing, my dress was from Dorothy Perkins and all my accessories (including flower hair pins) and shoes were from Forever 21. My entire outfit cost me no more than $80!

I knew I wanted there to be a geeky vibe in decor throughout the shower, but wanted to make sure it was subtle. I decided to go with writing some of my favorite quotes from some of my favorite fandoms on little chalkboard easels or place cards. The easels were from Target, while the chalkboard place cards were from Hobby Lobby. I sharpened up on my chalkboard art skills by looking through Pinterest and copying my favorite designs and layouts. Although time consuming, it was relaxing and I honestly was very surprised with the results. Word to the wise, don’t use regular chalk – a chalk pencil will give you much better lines and control especially if you will be writing/drawing on design elements as small as mine. Each of these easels or place cards were placed on the tables, along with a mason jar full of baby’s breath and gold-glittered antlers, which were my homage to Hannibal. I finished the centerpiece look with a little gold animal to tie in a childlike element all the while sitting on top of a wooden slab.

Although I could have gone crazy with geekiness, I wanted our shower to be simple and modern. Our venue was already very aesthetically pleasing to my style so I let it speak for itself. However, all the fellow geeks in attendance definitely took note of what I incorporated, which is exactly what I was hoping for and everyone else just found the quotes sweet. Overall, it was an awesome day with awesome people that I will cherish forever!

Nerdy Must Haves

Who Leggings; Leggings are a girl’s best friend. Why? They are easy to pack, feel like you are wearing pajamas and come in all sorts of fandoms. What’s not to love? Personally, I’m all about this new pair from TeeFury. Although I’m not the happiest with their sneaker line (dude, lay off the priciness), this new line of leggings is spot on. I wish I would have been able to snag a pair before next weekend’s MegaCon! Boo hoo.

Gryffindor Tee; This is one of the better designed house shirts I’ve seen in awhile. I love the large house animal combined with each house’s characteristics. Naturally, I chose my own house to showcase, but fear not. They come in all houses, shapes and colors (er, maybe). It’s also temporarily on sale so treat yoself while you can!

Potter flats; OK, so there is going to be kind of a theme during this post of must haves. I am completely and utterly obsessed with this beautifully designed flats from Electrique Sole on Etsy. Considering the prices I’ve seen for other custom shoes, they are a steal at $45 and are completely adorable. Again, I wish I could have scooped up a pair for Megacon, but I’m pretty sure I’m going to take advantage and order them for April’s first Geek Girl Brunch!

Hogwarts T-Shirt Dress; Another great Potter find. This shirt dress looks so comfy and the perfect addition to any convention wardrobe. Just pair it with a denim jacket and some cute sneakers and you are good to go. Added plus? You can rock this adorable look for Sunday brunch, running errands or date night! It’s so versatile and subtle. A total score if you ask me.
