The Cool Fix

IMG_5433

Spring has sprung and summer is right around the corner. That means it’s time to slap on those bikini’s (a scary thought for me this year) and get to work pruning unwanted hair. This has been quite an issue for me ever since I got pregnant. My skin has been extra sensitive and it hasn’t really gone back to its usual self yet now 5 months postpartum. That’s why I was excited to try out Shaveworks’ The Cool Fix, which treats those pesky reactions your skin can get when shaving or waxing. I used this product for a week, and I was so happy with the results!

This targeted all-in-one gel lotion fights ingrown hairs, razor burn irritation, redness and everyday common hair removal woes from head to toe. Featuring a clinical level of a potent moisturizer, Mediacalm Complex, that instantly soothes the skin and reduces redness on contact – so gentle, it can be applied immediately after hair removal without the effect of burning or stinging. An effective combo of active ingredients including Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Phytic Acid, exfoliates dead skin cells on the surface, kills existing bacteria under the skin and simultaneously dissolves the dead skin so any hairs trapped underneath can be freed. The perfect solution for a tough fight against irritation and ingrown hairs. As if all of that wasn’t wonderful enough, a portion of the proceeds of the sale of this product is donated to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

I used this product daily, both in the morning and evening, for a week and have really noticed a difference in my bikini zone. The red bumps have lessened and so has the itchiness. I’m pretty sure it’s going to be a staple in my new summer beauty regime! I have to add that I attempted to use this on my legs after shaving one evening, and I had a major Home Alone moment. Ouch, did it sting!!! I haven’t used it on my legs since, and have just stuck to my main problem area, which is the bikini zone.

Want to try it out for yourself now that bikini season is upon us?
Check it out at The Miami Beach Ulta (or an Ulta near you) – it retails for $26.

Disclosure; I was given a sample of this product for free in exchange for this review, however, all opinions are my own.

What I Wore: Mouseketeer on Wheels

IMG_7997 copy

It’s hard to believe that Geek Girl Brunch South Florida is a year old. A year ago, Aurora and I embarked on this journey and I think it’s safe to say that we never thought it would result in over 200 members. We have been able to meet so many amazing ladies that share our interests, and create a safe, no-judgement zone for these inspiring lady geeks. We get to play dress up every month and have formed some pretty incredible friendships. As an officer, it has let me fulfill my event planning fantasies and has also given me some much needed leadership skills. I’ve also had a hell of a lot of fun!

With that said, we decided to throw a first birthday at Miami’s Super Wheels. I actually had my 8th birthday party there when it was called Hot Wheels (am I dating myself?), so it definitely hit all those nostalgia feels as soon as I stepped in there. I have to admit, being a roller derby drop out, I just wanted an excuse to strap on my skates again, but I was so glad everyone else joined in on the fun. It was Disney-themed, and I decided to go retro and recreate a derby-esque vintage Mouseketeer look.

iRead: Yes Please

IMG_4543

I’m coming at you with another book review this week, and I’m happy to report that I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Next on my list was Amy Poehler’s Yes Please, and I was really excited to dig into it. I’ve been a big fan of Ms. Poehler since becoming a huge follower of Parks and Recreation during my pregnancy. It was my happy place and helped curb my anxiety after experiencing a loss. It means a lot to my fangirl heart. Her character, Leslie Knope, is basically what every woman aspires to be (or should), and I was happy to read that Amy was not Leslie, but someone I could relate to even more.

Yes Please gives you such a candid look into Amy’s life, and I think it especially spoke volumes to me because of the stage of my life that I am in. As a new mom in her mid-30’s trying to navigate through a world of new experiences and challenges, this book made me feel like I wasn’t alone. And not only was I not alone, but if I met Amy freaking Poehler for drinks, we would have so much common ground to talk about. And that felt refreshing.

I won’t go through the entire book, but some of the highlights that really spoke to me were the following:

“Good for you, not for me.”

This is a phrase that Amy discovered works best when you don’t agree with someone, but at the same time do not want to offend or belittle them. I think it’s so powerful and I’ve been using it a lot since finishing the book. She used it in reference to her onscreen and real life friend, Rashida Jones, who decided to give birth to her kids without any drugs and man, could I relate! I could have never passed on my epidural, but a lot of my friends have. I do not upturn my nose to their decision – good for them, not for me. I wish more people could use this mentally instead of all the verbal attacks I see being tossed around on social media. Being a woman is hard enough before everyone decides they need to judge every single one of your decisions and hold them under a microscope. Lets try to live in harmony, ok?

Life with Luna: 5 Months

IMG_5089

I can hardly believe that we are standing on the edge of a half birthday. Luna is 5 months old, and although Mommy is very , very tired (I have a newfound hate for daylight savings time), she could not be happier. Every day little Luna’s smile lights up my life. She continues to be the happiest baby and is learning new things every day! She is getting her helmet off this week, is rolling both front/back and back/front and trying to shuffle her way around when in her play pen area. She squeals like strangled dolphin when she laughs and is obsessed with her dogs – often reaching out to touch their fur and giggling when they run around the house.

She has discovered her feet, and cannot keep them still. Most of the time, she is working on a way to fit them into her mouth. Speaking of her mouth, Luna has just started the teething process. Everything goes straight into her mouth, including many of my body parts. However, one of the cutest new developments is that Luna will reach her hands out for either myself or her dad so that we can place it in her palms.  She will then caress our faces (she loves her dad’s beard!) and pull them towards her own so she can give us open mouthed kisses. I absolutely melt.

Now that her helmet is coming off, I have to transition her into a bassinet instead of the Rock ‘n Play she’s been sleeping in since birth (it is a main culprit for flat head). I am totally tormented because, being a new mom, I am terrified she will die in her sleep and I often spend sleepless nights in bed just staring at her breathing. I will no longer be able to do this obsessive staring since I cannot see her when she’s in the bassinet (it’s higher than our bed). This would require me to physically get up and peer over it in order to check on her. Mommy is not cool with this new situation. So I could use some encouragement and a reminder to stop being so neurotic. Or at least to try. 😉

Here’s hoping I’ll be victorious at our next update!
