Weekend Highlights

Saturday brought on the Buzz Bake Sale in West Palm Beach with two of my favorites: Elissa & Roxy. Like I mentioned in the previous post, I was mostly there for both Metric, Our Lady Peace and 30 Seconds to Mars. I left feeling the same. The rest of the bands were god awful – in fact, I don’t know how people can listen to such crappy music. To be fair, I didn’t hear any of the bands on the side stage except for Metric so I can’t count them in the terrible category. But Say Anything, Sick Puppies, The Used and Chevelle made my ears want to bleed. Panic! At the Disco still didn’t win me over (just not my kind of music), but I have to admit that the lead singer’s voice was outrageous. Matisyahu was really great as well, but unfortunately, I just caught the tail end of his performance.

We arrived at the Bake Sale just in time to see Metric and boy, am I glad we did! They put on an amazing show! Starting with Monster Hospital and ending with Stadium Love, their set was full of energy and general badass-ery. We were able to squeeze our way to the front, which made it even more amazing. My friend, Roxy, shared a special moment with the lead singer, Emily, during their set which I believe made her day, week and month. As if that wasn’t cool enough, Emily was cool enough to mingle with the fans after the show and was willing to sign our tickets and take some photos. The only downside was that their set was only 30 minutes long. I hope they decide to make their way down to South Florida again as a headlining act. We love you down here, Metric!

Our Lady Peace put on a pretty great performance as well. Although I was kind of disappointed to not see a very big turnout for them, they still gave it their all. Raine still sounds great as always and they catered to us 90’s addicts by playing all their old hits. My favorite part was when Raine ran out into the middle of the amphitheater to sing amongst us. Although he picked the center aisle and we were seated all the way to the left, it was still pretty awesome and got even those that weren’t all that enthused pumped up for the remainder of their set.

30 Seconds to Mars were the festival’s headliners so we had to wait all day and night to see them finally hit the stage. While casually walking around the fairgrounds, we were approached by someone selling both their new CD, This is War, and wristbands for $10 which would allow you to be part of an autograph signing. We handed over the $10 and anxiously awaited for the signing. At about 7pm, we joined the massive line for the signing. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to take any photos with them or even of them because the band wanted to sign each and every copy that was sold that day (over 700) so we had to move along pretty quickly. The band was really sweet, but I have to admit that Jared Leto’s intense stare really creeped me out a bit. So much so that I immediately broke eye contact with him and scurried away. What happened to my Jordan Catalano? Boo hiss.

Anywho, their actual performance was amazing as always. I know they are not everyone’s favorite band, but they are such a guilty pleasure of mine. Something about their music does it for me and I couldn’t even begin to explain to you why. Their set mainly consisted of songs off of their sophomore album (and my personal favorite), A Beautiful Lie, but they made sure to play a few songs off their new album, This is War, including the title track, Kings and Queens and 100 Suns. Jared also decided to show the crowd a little love and ran into the middle aisle during Attack, which was pretty rad. He also closed the show by inviting all of us to ignore the event security and run down all the way to the front, which I did. While down there, I was able to take this short video of the band performing 100 Suns:

Overall, I had a great time and hope these bands decide to come back without all the extra baggage! I hope you all have a good Monday – Melificent will be back in business as usual this week so look for new daily posts!
