DIY Holiday Wreaths

OK, so I know I like to say that I am a big, fat Grinch during the holidays, but I feel like something may change this year. Maybe it’s the fact that we have our own house to call home and I can actually put up lights, and really enjoy the festive decor. Or maybe I’m just changing (for the best?). Either way, I’ve wanted to take on a new crafty project (I itch for one if it’s been too long) and I think now is definitely the time! Modern, quirky holiday wreaths are my favorite way to dress up a home for the season, but unfortunately, they tend to go for big bucks and with the state of things, we definitely have to find alternatives. Cue DIY!

My favorite blogs state that this is an easy one, but we’ll see how I fare. A wire wreath frame, ornaments, yarn, Styrofoam balls and a glue gun is all you need to create something similar, which should only take a few stops and not many dollar bills. For a full tutorial (and the one I’ll be using), click here.

Update:

Last night I began the endeavor and it was a doozy. Not because it was difficult, but because it was so time consuming and not quite as affordable as anticipated. In fact, I have hit over $40 already and I still need a substantial amount more of Styrofoam balls. However, I think it’s going to be absolutely beautiful once it’s done and I think I may have chosen the wrong shops to pick up some of my supplies. I’m going to try to hit up the dollar store for additional supplies later this week and see if it eases the pain. If it does, I can see this as a real great gift idea for family and friends! One thing I did realize was that I can make little (or large) yarn balls for all kinds of decor. Excited to put that to use in the future!

    OMG!!!!!!

I have a whole slew of holiday DIY to-dos on my list but the thought of a wreath had intimidated me. This looks like it will turn out absolutely gorgeous! I LOVE the color scheme you chose! Keep with it, and even if it costs more than it would have to buy one already made, it will be a special holiday keepsake for years!

If you want something else that’s cute, vintagey-looking and easy, my sister and I made these Mason jar snow globes the other night and we can’t wait to make more! http://malcolli.posterous.com/misscolliflower-and-i-crafted-last-night-holi

    Happy crafting!

Looks great so far! And what a great way for me to use up the tons of yarn in my stash that I just don’t want to knit… ;D

    Glad you ladies like it!!!
I came home today to see that all the balls had become detached from the wire wreath – really bummed me out. This thing will be the death of me!

Mallory – I love the mason jar idea! Something tells me we are going to get along great 😉

I was in HomeGoods yesterday off in the Oakland Plaza and they have some really amazing wreaths at affordable prices. They have feather ones in hot pink too!! (I’m going through a feather craze right now). I saw a hot pink Reindeer and thought of you! ha.. That was a little pricey but the wreaths are great prices. You might want to check them out. I got a silver one made entirely out of bells ($9.99) I’m going to hang up on my apartment door and will add a ‘blue’ bow for Chanukah! hee
