Weekend Highlights

Credit: Facebook

My excitement reached max capacity last week when I discovered that their would be a huge food truck rally basically in my backyard. Although these kind of events happen around South Florida often, they never make their way to my neck of the woods, West Kendall. Much less, of this magnitude. Twenty trucks were advertised to attend – twenty. I didn’t even know we had that many trucks! Needless to say, I spread the word like wildfire on both Twitter and Facebook and began to brainstorm about which trucks would be in attendance.

When I arrived at the location (12975 SW 137 Avenue), I could not believe my eyes. There were cars parked for what seemed like miles and an impressive crowd meandering around a serious group of gourmet food trucks. I instantly felt like a little kid in a candy store. I didn’t know which truck to visit first and was just overwhelmed with goodness. I decided my best plan of attack was to choose the trucks I had not yet tried at previous events. My first stop was Cheese Me. I had their mac ‘n cheese pancakes. Sure, that may seem gross to some, but trust me, they were all sorts of heavenly. Of course, it was the worst option for my sensitive and cranky stomach, but I knew deep down inside that it was worth it. Worth every cheesy bite of awesome.

Culinary Adventures

In an attempt to keep myself motivated in the kitchen, I decided to document what I’ve been concocting here with you all. Hope this plan works out and that I continue to feel as excited about learning how to cook, even if it may seem basic to all of you out there in the blogosphere. I literally started only being able to cook rice…in a rice cooker. My feelings towards being in the kitchen and putting together meals has already changed drastically in only a couple of weeks. I find myself actually having a good time, although, in turn I also have noticed that I can get pretty down on myself when I make mistakes. I have to remind myself that mistakes are bound to happen, especially when I’m still at such a rookie level, but my fear of failure gets the best of me at times.

Last week, I found a recipe for penne with corn and brown butter. It seemed simple enough for a beginner like me to try to tackle so I excitedly went to the grocery store to pick up any ingredients I didn’t have at home. One big gripe I have had so far? There always seems to be one especially annoying ingredient that I cannot find at the grocery store. It is beyond irritating. This time? Oregano leaves. I decided to leave them out of the recipe, which ended up being a bad decision. It was a little bland, but I was proud of myself for browning the butter all by myself. Of course, I was obsessively stirring the butter in complete and utter fright, fearing that I would manage to burn my entire kitchen down, but all was good. I may have been a little too safe, as the hubs told me I could have left it in the pan longer, giving it an even nut-ier taste. However, good news was that I cooked the corn perfectly and no one was poisoned! I paired it with a ready-made organic butternut squash soup and was happy.

Happy Hump Day: Charlie Cox

Charlie Cox is a pretty recent newcomer to the acting scene and is best known for his role as Tristan Thorne in the 2007 film adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel, Stardust. If you haven’t checked this movie out, please do! It didn’t do very well while out in theaters, but almost everyone I know that has watched it has fallen in love with the story, as well as Mr. Cox (feels like I’m talking about a dirty stripper or a bad porn, sorry Charlie). It’s perfectly charming and magical, just as any good fantasy film should be and that’s partly due to both Charlie and Claire Danes’ performances (along with Neil Gaiman’s ridiculous storytelling skills). Is it wrong to say that I may love him more in period costumes than in regular day-to-day clothing? OK, who am I kidding? I’d take him any way!

Make sure to check him out in this year’s Killing Bono, a fun movie about two rival bands from Dublin – one being U2. He’ll be starring alongside fellow British hottie, Ben Barnes. Hot Brits and killer music? I guess I’ll just start standing in line now. 😉

Squeeworthy: Pirate Radio//The Boat That Rocked

I had wanted to see this movie ever since I laid eyes on the first trailer, but finally got around to checking it out last week while the hubs and I were having a lazy night consisting of a couch, butternut squash soup & On Demand. I knew I’d like it, but I didn’t think I’d love it. Joke was on me, it seems, because I fell head over heels.

Mainly it had to do with the music, the cute British kids and the styling.
…and the music.

Best of 2010

It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. It’s almost time to say goodbye to 2010 and welcome 2011 with open arms and a fresh outlook. But before we light the sparklers, fill the champagne glasses and partake in some midnight kisses, let’s look back at the best of 2010, through the eyes of Melificent:

Favorite movie:

Inception

Everything was so absolutely right about this movie. I loved the concept, the visuals, the actors. But you can’t expect anything less coming from director, Christopher Nolan.
