Convention Outfit Inspirations & Tips

Everyone! It is convention season, and it is most definitely in full swing.
I’ve been living vicariously through everyone’s amazing posts and photo ops and the like, but now it is my turn! Miami will host its largest convention, Florida Supercon, July 4th weekend and I’ll be both on a panel, hopefully getting a tattoo (!!) and just roaming the convention floor. I thought in honor of my first Con in a year (!), I’d put together some inspiration outfits for you all in case you are struggling with what to wear to a Con, along with some handy dandy tips!

Convention Style: Fandom Skirt

I love this look because it’s comfy, while still being really girly. I’m a big fan of pairing crop tops with high waisted skirts, and this one in particular from TeeFury is just too perfect. In order to make it convention appropriate, you have to throw on a pair of comfy (yet stylish) sneakers, and ShoeZero.com has a wide range to choose from, and I personally love how a fandom baseball cap looks with more feminine pieces. The juxtaposition is so fun! Add on a few more understated accessories, such as a necklace and themed nail polish, and you are all set to go!

Animate Miami 2014

This year was my first attending Animate Miami, and I had a great time! I had always wanted to cosplay as a Sailor Scout for as long as I could remember, but lets face it. If you want to really look the part, you have to spend some major bucks. Luckily, the Australian clothing brand, Living Dead Clothing created the most adorable Sailor Scout skater dresses that screamed everyday cosplay. I’d featured the Sailor Jupiter dress in past must haves, and I finally took the plunge and bought it! I was able to pair it with some amazing accessories from Etsy seller, UniqueCosplayProps.

It was so fun walking around and finding other fellow Moonies that were cosplaying – I think you could say that I caught the cosplay bug big time. I’m already putting together my next cosplay for Magic City Comic Con (& it’s going to be awesome)! Although Animate seemed very small – I was happy to see some of my old favorites, such as Brian and Matt Reedy and Jessica Grundy, as well as some new ones, like Silvertales. I also really wish the A/C was turned up a little more – it was wicked cold (at times, uncomfortably so) especially in my outfit.

I missed the voice actors for Sailor Moon since I went on Sunday (boo hiss), but I expected more Sailor Moon merch! I’ve been trying to find some fun and unique pieces at all the cons I’ve gone to but haven’t been successful. The closest I got was this killer Sailor Moon art print from Matt Reedy (which is adorable), but I hope to find more – don’t let me down, Magic City!

Weekend Highlights: SheCon

I was really looking forward to SheCon. Since revamping the blog, I needed some pointers on how to grow my readership and possibly monetize it. So I thought this would be the perfect place to gain some knowledge and network with people in the industry. Unfortunately, I was sorely disappointed on many fronts.

Before I continue, I want to say that I only attended Friday from 9am until noon-ish. That is when I decided I had enough. Maybe it got better afterwards, but from friends’ accounts I don’t really think it did. With that said, I thought the event was very poorly thought out. Attendance was extremely low (I’d say there were about 60 people at the Guy Kawasaki panel), and the quality of material presented was crap. Aside from Kawasaki (who actually recommended the Bieber movie as a must watch), the speakers seemed really off target and not very knowledgeable or well-rounded. I can honestly say I learned nothing from their presentations, sadly. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want this to be a slam fest, but suffice it to say that it was a huge let down. Huge.

Thankfully I was able to make the best out of the situation and spend some quality time with friends that I don’t get to see too frequently. So it wasn’t a complete waste of a day. However, I really hope that SheCon is able to take all the feedback and improve upon it for next year because the concept was really great and had the potential to be something pretty special. Here’s hopin’.

Have a great week, everyone, and congratulations on surviving the elusive rapture! 😉
