What I Wore: You CAN Sit With Us

Last weekend was the first time that I attended a Geek Girl Brunch Miami event as a brunchette, and not an officer. Whoa.
It elicited a lot of feels that were constantly contradicting each other: happiness, relief, sadness, regret, etc. Lets face it, it’s not easy to walk away from something you absolutely love, no matter how much you know you need to. Something I can say I feel with 100% certainty is pride. From the outside, this organization may seem very silly and immature, but it is very important. It made a lot of ladies feel like they were accepted for the first time, free of judgement. They could be themselves in a safe environment.  And I will always be proud and humbled to know that I was a part of creating that in my city.

With those heavy feels aside, our brunch was 90’s themed, and I decided to go as my number one favorite 90’s geek queen: Daria. Without even knowing, one of my good friends (that I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for Geek Girl Brunch) ended up dressing up as Jane. Kismet. Who else says leggings like Quinn and immediately imagines their eye popping out of its socket when they are super frustrated like Daria’s dad? Anyone? Just me? Cool.

What I Wore: Hedge Witch

I love falling in love with new fandoms. The Magicians is definitely a new(ish?) obsession. The second I saw the promo image on my OnDemand, I was hooked. So hooked, I watched a sneak peek of the first episode a couple of weeks before it aired on SyFy. It hasn’t disappointed since. It comes as no surprise that I am addicted to fantasy and witchcraft, so this spoke to my fangirl soul on so many levels. Also, can we talk about how GORGEOUS the cast is? I am obsessed with all of them. My true SDCC 2017 tragedy was not running into them at some point.

With that said, my last Geek Girl Brunch Miami event (read more about it here) was a visit to Fillory. Our backdrop was the beautiful Barnacle Park in Coconut Grove, and although scorching hot, we had a great time. I decided to pay my compliments to Marina, my absolute favorite hedge witch and bad ass bitch.  I had all these pieces in my closet already (that witch life), so it was definitely one of my easiest GGB outfits to date!

Is this a tut? Am I doing this right?

What I Wore: Not All Who Wander Are Lost

It’s always so fun to host Geek Girl Brunch Miami events. It’s become my one mama’s day out a month, so I enjoy it for all it’s worth! This month’s brunch was mine to plan, and being my birthday month, I decided to go with my first real-true-Internetworthy-hardcore fandom: Lord of the Rings. I remember joining Livejournal during the LOTR craze, and fangirling hard. I mean, my birthday cake had Frodo’s face plastered on it for my 21st and I stalked all fanpages possible for the entire cast. I still consider all of them my little babies, and love to see them all doing well. At one point, my screen name was “hobbitluv,” so yeah. It was serious stuff.

I knew I wanted to honor Frodo in a casual cosplay way (guys, it is HOT for a hobbit cloak, ok?) so I went boho. I made sure pieces I chose were flowy and comfy to emulate hobbit garb, and matched the colors of Frodo’s outfit. I paired it with my beloved Sting replica from The Noble Collection, and absolutely love the way it all turned out. I also love that I can use all the pieces again repeatedly because they are so cute, versatile and comfortable!

What I Wore: To Boldly Go

IMG_6525

Our latest Geek Girl Brunch Miami theme was Star Trek, and I was having a moment. I had the perfect cosplay – a science officer dress that I wore for Halloween a few years back. I happily tried it on and….it no longer fit. My post-baby body just wasn’t having that bodycon fit for anything in the world, so I had to improvise. I’m actually really glad I had to because I would have never stumbled on this amazing neon space themed crop tee.

It was the perfect homage to “the final frontier,” while still keeping me comfortable enough to drink one too many mimosas, socialize with our brunchettes and have an impromptu dance party. Yeah, you heard me. That’s how Miami does brunch: with DJ’s.

Can we also have a moment of silence (or squee-ing?) for Studio DIY’s Can’t Clutch This subscription? My pop tart clutch is TOO.MUCH. It literally gives me so much joy every month, and who doesn’t need a little bit of that in their life?

Hatch Miami

IMG_5185

After a long time of contemplating it, I finally took the plunge and decided to participate as a vendor at a local fair. My fellow Geek Girl Brunch Miami officers got accepted as vendors into Hatch Miami, which is a fair targeted at supporting local women in the city. You had to be a woman to be accepted into the event, and when I decided to participate, not only as a Geek Girl Brunch officer, but also as a business owner for Geek Girl Gang, I had no idea how positive the experience would be.

It was so refreshing and inspiring to be around other creatives. And not only creatives, but women. It felt like a big supportive family. I was able to meet some people I had never seen outside of social media, and make some new friendships as well with a lot of talented ladies. It made me more confident about my decision to open the shop back up and feed this creative monster within me. I can’t wait to soldier forward with new ideas and a surer mindset.

Although I’m not sure when the next event will be, I strongly urge you to keep your eyes peeled and attend if you are a South Florida local!
