FanMail Promo Code

Screen Shot 2015-08-10 at 10.27.23 PM

You may remember my review of the newest geeky girl subscription box, FanMail. I absolutely loved the inaugural box and thought it was one of the first geeky boxes that is truly worth the fee. I got so many amazing goodies from so many different fandoms that I basically didn’t know what to do with myself. What could be even better?

FanMail decided to partner up with me, and offer all my readers $2 off their next box with the code: Mel2OFF! Isn’t that completely wizard? I thought so! I’m especially excited for this month’s theme: Super Sheroes. You know you are going to get some pretty amazing stuff crammed in that little box with such an amazing pool of ladies to choose from!

Remember to give the ladies behind FanMail some love too by adding them on the following social media outlets and telling you how much you love them and their company:

Favorite Instagrams

My absolute favorite social media outlet is Instagram. I’ve always been the girl taking one too many pictures of everything, so this app was like a dream come true. Editing them, filtering them and sharing them with the world is just too much fun. Add the fact that you can find other users that share similar interests or are at the same events via hashtags, and I was sold. I love finding out about new IG accounts, so I figured I’d share some of my fav’s with all of you in case you are looking for some new users to follow or just some inspiration! And don’t forget to follow me on IG!

pineapplesandcoffeecups; I would love to live in Adriana’s technicolor fun world. All her photos evoke bright sunshine, yummy desserts and cotton candy living. Anytime I’m feeling down in the dumps, I check out her feed. It’s so fun (& at times hilarious) that it’s impossible to stay bummed.
thepinkdiary; Absolutely gorgeous flat lays of both outfits, beauty products and just pretty things. I love her pastel palette and impeccable taste.
galadarling; One of my favorite bloggers, as well as Instagrammers. Gala believes in living a sparkly life full of fun and positivity and her photos reflect just that. Definitely another mood lifter.

The Unicorn Files

I absolutely love the geek girl movement that is sweeping the Internets, whether it be in the form of blogs, like The Nerdy Girlie, or books, like The Fangirls Guide to the Galaxy. That’s why I was immediately drawn to The Unicorn Files project. The Unicorn Files is a photo book full of beautiful images taken of true geek girls in their natural environment: their homes. Its goal is to represent this community and expose others to the fact that geek girls, in fact, do exist and are a vital part of geek culture.

For that reason, I knew I had to contact the project’s creator, Terra Clarke Olsen, to get to know her and the project a little better. Check out what she had to say;

1. Can you tell us a little about your project, The Unicorn Files, and where you got the inspiration.

The idea came to me over two years ago at the height of the “fake geek girl” nonsense. After a year, I finally got the nerve to pitch the idea to Nate, and he loved it! “The Unicorn Files” is in reference to a term I resent being called (which I touch on in a Seattle Weekly article). Few months later and here we are!

FanMail Box

DSCF3958

I am so happy that there are so many subscription boxes coming out that aim at female geeks! It’s about time, in my opinion. Like most subscription boxes, FanMail will have a different theme every month and cater to the fashionable, yet geeky female. It is $21.99/month & usually comes chock-ful of goodies retailing at about $50 – what a deal! So what came in this month’s Fantasy box?

Well, a whole bunch of stuff did!!! The box was full of goodies, including a wedding invite to the purple wedding from Game of Thrones (who wants to be my +1?), a Toothless t-shirt from How To Train Your Dragon, Sorceror’s Stone Soap (which I’m sure will make you all sorts of magical), a gorgeous Legend of Zelda Hyrule Royal Crest necklace, Harry Potter nail decals and button, Thranduil spider brooch from The Hobbit & a couple of character pins from Once Upon a Time & Lord of the Rings.

I told you it was packed with geekery! I personally loved this box and thought that for the price, you really got a lot to choose from. Not only quantity matters, of course. I’ve reviewed other, more well-known boxes, and have been disappointed at their “filler junk.” What I liked about this box was that it had a lot of quality items that fit a broad spectrum of fandoms. For example, I’m not a Zelda fan, but my best friend is so I am going to gift her the necklace. However, every other item in this box fits my interests perfectly and they are not items I’m just going to toss. The Thranduil brooch is drop dead gorgeous, I love the pamper myself in the bath so the soap will definitely be used, I’m a nail art addict so I’m beyond excited with the decals and I love me a good dragon tee (in fact, I already wore this one to Florida Supercon a couple of weeks ago)!

Lastly, I loved the little added feature of a list of geeky media (movies, TV shows, comics) that you should check out for the month to stay up to date on all things fandom. How cool is that? I honestly can’t wait for what they will have in store for their members this month with a fun theme like Out of This World! Interested? Make sure to sign up – spots are filling up quickly!

iRead: The Fangirl’s Guide to the Galaxy

Screen Shot 2015-06-08 at 8.20.37 PM

I couldn’t have loved this short and adorable guidebook to being a fangirl by Sam Maggs any more. Seriously. I found myself squealing, “yes!!!,” multiple times while reading certain passages and often read them aloud to my husband (to his constant chuckles). It basically contains everything needed to know about living the fangirl life, except what made this book special is that it spoke about fangirls in a positive light. Oftentimes the word is used in a derogatory manner, and I really appreciated that this book celebrated the fangirl with constant reassurance that you do not have to apologize for your strong feelings, uncontrollable actions and quirky habits. Paired with interviews with some pretty important ladies in the geek world and an entire section dedicated to feminism, it is the perfect gift to either give yourself or that geeky girl in your life. In fact, I plan on circulating the book around my circle of geeky girlfriends.

My absolute favorite part of the entire book though was the section dedicated to #thatconlife as I have affectionately hashtagged it. It detailed every single detail of convention culture whether you are a newbie, a cosplayer or a seasoned pro. Whatever Sam discussed, she was right on point – down to the con crud (I suffered from this illness a few years back after SDCC, and it was beyond awful) and post-con depression (I got this pretty bad after last year’s SDCC).

Basically, pick up this amazing book if you would label yourself as a geek girl, are dating a geek girl or would like to (wink wink). It’s a quick and enjoyable read with a lot of resources that are sure to make you smile and squee (sometimes all at once)!
