Geek Girl Brunch Miami: Inaugural Brunch

DSCF2699

I have been so excited for this event since last year when I was chosen to be a chapter officer for the Geek Girl Brunch Miami branch. I had been following the organization for awhile, being a fan of co-founder, Jamila’s blog, Girl Gone Geek. I always wished we had something similar, so I jumped on board the second they started calling for officers. South Florida sorely lacks in geek culture (especially targeted towards females), so I thought it would be a welcomed addition to our city.

Both myself and Aurora (my fellow officer) planned a Harry Potter themed inaugural brunch that would be hosted by Rok: Brgr in South Miami on April 26th. They were generous enough to allow us a big chunk of their outdoor space on their busiest day and time of the week: Sunday brunch! We wanted to make this very special for our new brunchettes, so we reached out to vendors for specialty swag. Each brunchette received a swag bag full of goodies (see full list below) and we gave away some adorable threads from So Effing Cute for the best dressed witch, as well as trivia winners!

Sure these add-ons were great, but honestly, what made the event so special for me personally was the beautiful positive energy swirling around the tables that you could basically touch. Every single girl got along great, and ice breakers weren’t even needed. There was never a break in conversation! Plus, everyone was so grateful as the brunch wrapped up, and equally excited for the next event. They even had to basically kick us out of the restaurant – no one wanted to stop chatting! Overall, it was a truly magical morning and I cannot wait to continue making Geek Girl Brunch Miami bigger, better and more influential in our community.

Geek Girl Brunch: Miami

Local ladies: I am so excited to announce this great news!

I’ve been a big fan of Jamila’s blog, Girl Gone Geek, for some time now. Her style is on point and we share many (if not all) of the same fandoms. She is also the co-founder of Geek Girl Brunch. Geek Girl Brunch is a monthly meetup group of geeky girls in a brunch setting (mimosas are a must) that are set to a particular theme (their magical girl brunch was one of my favorites). This group was only set in NYC, but I was so happy when I heard they were looking to expand to other cities and even countries! I was so in.

Thankfully, Jamila entrusted me and I will be one of the officers for the Miami chapter of Geek Girl Brunch!!!! I will be sharing duties with the amazing Aurora, who if you remember, was our first guest on The Fangirl Diaries (check out our podcast together here). We will be officially launching in April 2015, but will be hard at work until then getting together the most perfect inaugural brunch!

In the meantime, if you are local and interested in joining the fun, head over to Geek Girl Brunch and click “Join Geek Girl Brunch.” This will immediately put you on our list. You can also start following us on social media for the latest and greatest;

Geeky Girl Stereotypes

What do you think a “geeky girl” is supposed to look like? Act like?

I’ve been approached several times recently while promoting my blog at events by people that are shocked to hear that I consider myself a geek. Number one, isn’t that an insult? Number two…”But, you are dressed so cute! I would have never thought!” Can we talk a bit about this?

Having geeky interests (sci fi, anime, gaming, etc), does not instantly mean that, as a woman, you must look unkempt. It also does not mean that you do not know how to socialize. My idea of the perfect day is being pampered at a salon and then going dancing and drinking at one of my favorite bars. Just because I spend my free time watching Sailor Moon and obsessing over all things BBC does not mean I can’t do the others. It’s silly to think that people are that one-dimensional. Also, what does loving Doctor Who have to do with my sense of style? I don’t understand how the two go hand in hand.

Unfortunately, I know some girls that have taken to labeling themselves as “geeks” so that they can be the object of desire for a whole group of men. These kind of girls have marred what it is to truly be a geeky girl, and have made people start to doubt the authenticity of a good looking girl that likes nerdy things. I find this to be so unfair. Who are you to say that I can’t be a nerd because I may look good in a crop top? I really wish shows like The Big Bang Theory would portray their female leads as being sexy and a little more fashion forward. Have you noticed how the guys always have the best geeky tees that are lusted over by fanboys across the country, yet do we see any of the girls sporting adorable Her Universe dresses or perfect fandom accessories? Nope. In fact, the only girl that looks hip and trendy most of the time is Penny, who is the token “cool girl” that could care less about the boys’ geeky interests.

C’mon media, help us geeky girls out. Women are slowly taking over this culture (did you hear that 44% of the audience for Guardians of the Galaxy were female?!?) and we deserve to be portrayed in a more positive light. What do you think about these unwanted stereotypes? I’d love to hear your opinions in the comments!

Geek Out: Geeky Fashion Feature

Ever since starting The Fangirl Diaries at the beginning of this year, I have been able to stumble across some pretty amazing new ladies to follow on the blogosphere. I’ve been especially inspired by those blogging about geeky fashion (i.e., The Stylish Geek, The Nerdy Girlie & Geek Piñata). Melificent is part fashion blog, part lifestyle, part whatever-comes-into-my-brain, but I have noticed over time that my geeky side is not showcased enough. For this reason, I want to incorporate it by having at least one geeky style post a month. That is, whether it be an outfit post, a round up of my favorite geeky accessories or home goods, I want this part of me to be seen.

So be on the look out for this month’s geek out. Did I just make up a new feature? Yessum.

The Fangirl Diaries

If you follow me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, this is old news, but I wanted to spread the word about my new side project. Don’t worry, Melificent is not going anywhere! I just wanted an outlet to share more of my hobbies, so a few friends and I created The Fangirl Diaries. It will be a YouTube channel and podcast where we can discuss our favorite fandoms. It’s a totally new avenue for me, being all-video-all-the-time, but I am beyond excited to get it rolling.

We released our teaser video last week, along with our Facebook fanpage, and we are already at 81 fans as of today! Squee! I will be recording our first vlog hopefully next week reviewing Series 3 of BBC’s Sherlock. I also want this project to be an open collaboration. That is, if you want to join in on the fun: the doors are open! We will be recruiting guests for almost all our podcasts, so make sure you shoot us an email at ilovethefangirls@gmail.com or send us a private message via Facebook if you are interested.

Finally, show us some love on all our social media accounts;
