Bringing a new baby into your life is a massive step that’s filled with a lot of joy. But, you’d be lying to yourself if you said it wasn’t stressful. The physical stress of raising a child is one thing, but the financial stress is another.
You see, having a baby means you need to make space for all the baby essentials. Unfortunately, these can be super expensive. So, here are a few of my favorite tips to help you save money on some of the key items you’ll need to buy:
Buy a multi-purpose stroller
Two of the most important things to buy will be a baby stroller and a car seat. Both of these items are essential for moving your baby around safely. If you buy the two separately, they can be pretty darn expensive. However, you can often find strollers that have multiple purposes. They are used like normal strollers, but you can remove the main carrier bit and it becomes a new born car seat that fits in your vehicle. Just like that, you have two things for the price of one. It’s a very easy tip – and you can apply it to a lot of other items as well. Think about things you can buy that have more than one purpose. They will always be more affordable than making loads of different purchases and getting lots of items.
Utilize hand-me-downs
Have you had other babies before? If so, you have a wealth of money-saving opportunities at your disposal. Hopefully, you kept some of the key baby items in your attic, just in case you planned on having another one. Now, you can reuse all of that stuff and save an absolute fortune.
What if this is your first baby? Don’t worry, you can still try the same concept. Ask your parents, relatives, friends – anyone you know – if they have some baby items going spare. Your parents might have your old crib or stroller, your brother/sister may have some things you can use, and so on. By utilizing these hand-me-downs, you stop yourself from spending lots of cash on new things.
Bulk buy diapers & similar items
Think about some of the baby things you’ll keep buying for weeks or months on end. Diapers are a great example, as are baby wipes, etc. If you purchase these things in bulk quantities, you can save so much money. Bulk buying is always more affordable, yet we have a strange tendency to avoid it. I think this is because it looks more expensive compared to buying smaller quantities. Spending $20 on diapers looks more reasonable than spending $40. But, the $40 bulk buy will last you way longer. In fact, you may repurchase the $20 item three or four times before the $40 one would run out!
If you know you will constantly rebuy things, it makes so much sense to buy them in bulk and save money.
Hopefully, these three tips can help you save cash when having a baby. Yes, there are lots of other ways that a baby will cost money. But, these tips will at least help you reduce your expenses when it comes to some of the essential items.
