What I Wore: Girls Nite

IMG_7844

When you and your bestie became moms months apart, you have even more built in support. We are constantly texting each other back and forth and asking for advice. Sometimes, we just want to vent. And sometimes, we just want to dance. And that’s exactly what we did last week when we heard She Wants Revenge was playing a show in South Florida. We used to dance around like maniacs to the band during our indie kid club days, so it was such a perfect way to reminisce about our wild, childless days.

I’m pretty sure everything hurt as I was driving home and I was so tired, but it was amazing to be out drinking beers and dancing to good music after all this time. Fellow moms: make sure you do you as often as possible!

With that said, I knew I had to dress comfortably and wear my best dancing shoes, and this stellar droid dress I found at Forever 21 of all places was the winner! It’s form fitted and short, but so unbelievably comfortable. It hugs me in all the right places and actually makes me confident about my post-baby body, which is still under-construction. And it’s high neck is perfect for rocking a nice high updo, which is basically all I’ve been doing since I’m completely over my hair.

Miami’s SaberCraft

IMG_7153

As a new mom, I’m always looking for new ways to exercise and work on my fitness. Right now, I’m attending a spinning class every weekend but it’s really far (but so affordable!). That’s why I was so happy when I found out that Miami had its own Jedi Academy (amongst other reasons, of course). South Florida doesn’t tend to be very fandom-friendly, so I was floored. The owners of SaberCraft, Alfred and Santiago, are a total joy and wanted to make sure that they brought quality combat techniques to Miami’s chapter after training with San Francisco’s Golden Gate Knights. The classes are more choreography-based, so they teach you the moves you loved to watch on screen. There is also a little Hatha Yoga incorporated since there is a definite overlap with those teachings of The Force.

I had the opportunity to take a class along with my chapter of Geek Girl Brunch last month and I can say that it was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. We initially started the class with a quick (but peaceful) meditation and then got to start learning moves with a foam saber. This way, everything was as safe as possible while we got used to maneuvering with our peers. The masters level students were also in attendance to help us, and we would often split into partners where they would instruct us 1:1. It was beyond amazing, and surprisingly empowering. When I would flow through the 6 moves in succession successfully, it was such a rush!

Nerdy Must Haves

collage

Unicorn garland; I’m pretty sure NoodleDollNelly is the cutest shop on Etsy. Ever. All their items are sure to make you smile ear to ear, and if they don’t, you may not have a soul. Sorry. One of my favorites of theirs is the unicorn garland. It would make the cutest addition to your little girl’s room, or lets be honest, your own room. You could also use it for photoshoots, parties, team meetings (if you are the best boss ever), etc. You get my drift. Unicorns are multipurpose. Get on my level.

Crybaby Usagi pin; Sure, Usagi is super annoying during her cry baby early years. But it’s what makes her transformation even more satisfying. If you are a little on the emotional side (and boy am I ever after becoming a mom), you will definitely appreciate her sad visage on your denim jacket in the form of this killer pin. Also, check out the rest of elorasaurus‘ shop – it’s full of adorable.

Mother of Wildlings tank; Everyone is hyped for Game of Thrones, and everyone has seen the “Mother of Dragons” tanks, tees, totes, everything. I like this new take on the “mother of” series. Ygritte was the best, and we all still miss her sass and power, so who wouldn’t want to birth a wildling? I used to want a dragons shirt, but this is one is now top of my list.

Happiest Rey on Earth tee; I am a huge fan of BeepBoopBeep Clothing, and this is one of my favorite designs. It actually made me tear up a little when I first saw it! Rey entering The Magic Kingdom with little BB8 in tow! I definitely am going to snag one of these for Luna’s first birthday (she’s going to visit the Mouse!), and I may have us rock a little matchy matchy action – just don’t tell the hubs! 😉

ps; Happy May the 4th!!!

Being Geek Chic: How to Style A Geeky Tee

beinggeekchic

I have decided to start a new feature on the blog where I give little tutorials, so to speak, about how to rock the geek chic look you see me donning all around this blog. I remember a friend once telling me she had no idea how girls could wear t-shirts as part of a stylish outfit, and I know a lot of people feel this way. They see tees as something to wear around the house or to throw on when you are having a lazy day. I come to tell you this isn’t so!

I’m a big fan of wearing geeky shirts out to girls nights, daytime adventures with the hubs and everywhere in between! It just takes a bit of practice and an eye for accessories to transition a tee from something you slap on to finish household chores to a totally hot fashion piece. Trust me when I say it’s easy, AND so comfortable! It’s also a perfect way to express your fandom, especially if you are picking up a tee from my personal favorite site, TeeFury!

I chose these 3 tees to style from the site, as they are three of my favorite fandoms at the moment: Sailor Moon, Jessica Jones & Star Wars (ps; I don’t care what you say about the word, Bae – I think it’s adorable).

Nerdy Must Haves

1. Geeky Travel Posters; I am a big fan of fandom travel posters as art, and those found through TeacupPiranha’s Etsy shop are some of the best I’ve seen. She has a variety of different worlds you can display, such as Star Wars, Star Trek and Disney landscapes, but this one for Game of Thrones’ The Wall is especially beautiful. You can get them in a variety of sizes and they are so affordable! I think they would be great to have framed around your snack table at your Game of Thrones viewing party!

2. BB-8 Patch; In case you have been living under a fashion rock, the new way to up your accessory game is by adding pins and patches to everything you possibly own. I’ve totally fallen for this trend and think a patched up denim vest/jacket is by far the coolest clothing item ever (look out for some posts about my own creations soon). If you are putting together a Star Wars themed jacket (because, lets be real, who ISN’T), this awesome wilderness/scout-inspired BB-8 patch is the perfect addition!

3. Custom My Little Pony Figures; If you were a child of the 80’s, like I was, you were probably a My Little Pony fanatic. My mom used to record the vintage cartoon on VHS for me so that I would have a new episode to watch every day after school and my late grandfather would buy me a new Pony figure every week. Roogna takes those vintage figures and customizes them to recreate pony-versions of pop culture icons, such as this bad ass Bowie Pony. I don’t know about you, but I think Friendship is Magic should take note and add him as a new character!

4. Harry Potter Baby Romper; Willow & Wither is one of my favorite spots on the Internet to find geeky baby clothes. Their quality is on point, the price isn’t outrageous and their patterns are just to die for. I had been drooling over the PeeWee Playhouse dress until I set my little eyes on this beyond perfect Potter Trio romper. I mean. I can’t even. There are literally no words (only slight squeaky sounds) that could express my pure joy and emotion over this article of clothing. I feel like Luna is going to transition out of her current size pretty soon, so I’m shutting my wallet for now, but you better believe this sucker will be mine hers soon.
