What I Wore: Smells Like Mommy Stress

dscf8078

Man, life has been crazy lately. I thought things were difficult at the beginning of mommyhood, but now that Luna is about to be one (!!!), I feel like I don’t have any time for anything! My organization skills have been pushed to the max, and I have no idea how I’ve been able to cross things off my list. There are a lot of transitions coming up as well, which has me kind of in a state, so to speak. I even got a muscle spasm in my neck from the stress. My work schedule is completely changing (so thankful to have work, seriously), I’m planning an intimate party for Luna and her first trip to Disney World (!!), the hubby’s birthday shortly after and then I’m headed to MegaCon Tampa Bay to return just in time for Halloween. Oh, and have I mentioned Luna is starting day care in November? It’s a lot. Almost too much. But I’m rolling on this wave, and trying my best to not lose my mind. Having it all takes your all, it seems.

In between the madness, I try to appreciate the little moments that really mean so much. After taking these photos, we were driving back home and I put my head on Luna’s lap while she was in her car seat. She found this hilarious and started giggling uncontrollably. I took in her laughter, breathed her in, and cried (with love + happiness, of course). When things get to be too much, I find just looking at this little thing I made to make it all right again.

Packing a Convention Bag

conventionpackingImage via Tumblr

I’m sure you’ve seen most fashion bloggers feature what’s in their bags or purses on their sites. As you know around here, I spend much more time and energy thinking about what I should pack in my convention bag, and chances are if you are reading this, you do too. So I figured I would share the wealth of information with you all, since I am so ridiculously hyped to attend Megacon Tampa Bay next month (have I mentioned David Tennant will be there???).

First off, if you are currently hunting for the perfect bag, check out my post from last year with a pretty fun round up. It’s imperative to pick the right bag because you’ll be toting all your most precious con goodies in it all day. But, on to the good stuff: what goes inside!

  • Small wallet with cash. Why is cash so important? Number one, it keeps you on a budget and number two, sometimes cash is the only way you’ll be able to nab something at a booth or cafeteria.
  • Business cards. Are you a geeky blogger like me? Conventions are just as much a networking event as they are a fun time for us! You never know who you may meet that will want to collaborate or hit you up later. Have them handy!
  • Water bottle and small snacks. Sometimes conventions can charge a lot for food and drink, so it’s important to bring little snacks to keep your sustenance without destroying your cash flow. Also, if you have food allergies like me, snacks from home that are safe to eat are absolutely necessary. I just recently heard that Megacon Orlando was not allowing outside food or drink at all, which is not cool, so make sure you check with the event beforehand.
  • Your phone and a charging case or battery pack. Your phone goes without saying, but it is absolutely necessary to make sure you are juiced all day long. You will be snapping photos, tweeting, making your Facebook and Instagram friends jealous, and even possibly livestreaming, so expect your phone’s battery life to be depleted at some point before you leave. I’m a big fan of Mophi cases, and this external charger is too amaze for words.
  • A book or gaming system. As to not deplete all your battery life while waiting in line for panels or for friends, make sure to take something else to entertain you during down time. I’m not much for handheld gaming, so I tend to bring whatever book or comic I’m reading at the time.
  • A permanent marker. You never know who you may run into that you’d like to get more information from. People do not always have business cards (but you will if you stick to this list – heh), and sometimes you just meet really cool people you’d like to befriend outside of the con scene. Sure, there’s Facebook for that, but you may want to be old school and jot your info down. Also, there are celebrities and artists at Con! If you are lucky enough to run into one informally, you can get their John Hancock on the fly.
  • Makeup. Chances are, your makeup will not hold up for the entirety of a day on the convention floor – especially if you are cosplaying! If people are constantly snapping your picture or you are meeting new people, you want to look your best, so make sure you bring whatever lipstick you are sporting and powder. Those are the two most important makeup items for me. If I were to recommend a long lasting lippie for a con, I would send you running over to Colourpop. These two items are small enough to fit into a backpack inner pocket, which is perfect to maximize space!
  • An awesome attitude. Cheesy, I know, but sometimes con life isn’t always super fun. There are long lines, lots of crowds and uncomfortable outfits. It’s so important to go in with a good attitude and expect some things to not be 100% as planned. This little tip of advice can actually be applied to anything, and is something I’m still training myself to accept.

What did you think of my list? Did I miss anything? Do you pack something you think is absolutely necessary that I missed?
Look forward to more Megacon-centric posts as we get closer to the big weekend!

iRead: American Gods

img_0543

I started reading American Gods almost 2 years ago while traveling for work. I ended up being robbed while on vacation shortly after, and the book bag they took had this little book tucked away in it. It wasn’t until recently that a friend bought me a new copy that I began to read it again. I was newly inspired to pick it up again when I found out they would be making a show out of it on Starz and it was headed by one of my favs, Bryan Fuller.

Needless to say, I was really pumped to get started and wrapped up in one of Gaiman’s worlds, as I have never read any of his work (I know, gasp). Unfortunately, I really can’t say I dug it much. This will be a somewhat spoiler-free review, but if you prefer to go into it completely in the dark, then do not click below.

Being Geek Chic: Subtle Geekery

I was given a request after my last Being Geek Chic post on how to incorporate geeky items into basic, every day outfits. I thought this was a great idea because it is something simple that you can do on an every day basis. And lets face it, I’m not always sporting a head to toe geeky-inspired outfit (shocker, I know!) The easiest way to bring in your fandom to any look is through jewelry. I’ve put together two outfits for you all that show you how you can rock your geekery without going head to toe fangirl.

I absolutely love the hippie/boho look these days. It’s so light and easy – exactly what this new mama craves when it comes to fashion. This off the shoulder, flowy top and faux suede fringe vest from Tobi are my new go-to’s when I need to look stylish without too much effort (check out other tops and outerwear from Tobi too). I paired them with a pair of cut off denim shorts and then starting adding some fandom jewelry, like a LOST necklace and Hunger Games-inspired ring. Both pieces are subtle little nods to things I love without overpowering the rest of the look.
Want to go full blown boho? Check out everything Tobi has to offer here.

Being Geek Chic: How to Style a Fandom Skirt

IMG_0352

When thinking of fandom-related skirts, you may struggle with how it could work outside of lets say, a geek girl brunch or a local convention. I’m here to share with you how you can incorporate a fandom skirt (in this case, the beautiful Moon Transformation skirt from TeeFury) for many different styled occasions. It’s possible and appropriate!

IMG_0354

I know I use this as a common outing, but it’s something I really miss doing on the regular, and that is: day drinking. If you are heading out on the town during the day with your girls, whether it be brunch, bar hopping or just taking in the sights while traveling, this outfit would work perfectly. Pair the skirt with a fun crop top and don’t fear too much pattern. The top I used is also a Sailor Moon reference and may have seemed too busy to pair with another patterned piece. Wrong! The two look great and the fact that they are both from the same fandom ties it in so nicely. When you add a pair of comfy, but stylish, sneakers to the mix, you are so ready to hit the pavement for a full day of fun!
