Thanks to Filter Magazine, I was able to score a digital copy last week of The Dead Weather‘s sophomore album, Sea of Cowards, which is officially released in the US today. I have to say at first listen, I was missing the fun, yet raw tunes from their 2009 debut, Horehound, but that was very short-lived. I popped my copy of the album in my car as we took a road trip this past weekend and was really able to sit back and enjoy it. After all, isn’t music better at maximum volume while barreling down a barren highway?
But I digress.
The opening track, Blue Blood Blues, is absolutely amazing and beautifully blue-sy in all the right ways. With verses such as shake your hips like battleships, you really can’t go wrong. Even Jack White confessed that this track was “bluesier and heavier than we ever thought we could be.” The first single, Die By The Drop, has that classic Dead Weather feel. Those familiar with the band understand what I mean: the whole gritty yet somehow still retaining that sing-songy quality that would make it a great addition to any karaoke bar type vibe. Others are more of a departure such as Looking At The Invisible Man as well as The Difference Between Us, by introducing a more dirty synth sound in addition to their usual urban blues.
Somehow, The Dead Weather were able to make an album that feels completely different and fresh, while still sounding like the band we all fell in love with last year. Definitely pick up this album if you are a Dead Weather fan, love Jack White or just are a fan of good old rock and roll or good music in general. It’s a keeper. Just don’t blame me if it causes you to get a couple of speeding tickets, OK?
And make sure to check out if the band is coming to a city near you to promote Sea of Cowards!

Unfortunately, I missed their show in Orlando last month and it looks like they are not coming back to Florida on this tour so please enjoy them for me. I will try not to shed too many indie kid tears. 😉
