What I Wore: Moonie Power

Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

It’s really no surprise at this point that I am a huge Sailor Moon fan – I mean, it really shouldn’t be. I adore all things magical and girl power so naturally I was drawn to the anime when I was a kid and still absolutely fawn over it as an adult. I love that with the success of Sailor Moon Crystal, all new sorts of merch is being put out there, but what I’m loving the most is those made with a lot of love by independent designers, like Geekilicious!

Elise makes all sorts of fangirl goodies, like throw pillows, iPhone cases and spiral notebooks, but she just recently started incorporating more clothing into the mix and I am so glad she did. She has these beautiful mini skirts and leggings made with such quality materials. I personally can’t wait to rock some of the mini’s once I get working on my post-baby bod, but I was excited to be able to play dress up with these fantastic Usagi leggings. It’s not every day that a pregnant girl gets to feel “super cute” in an outfit, but this one did the trick! Little pro tip? Pair leggings with not only a basic top, like I did, but also with a longer button down. This will help mask any “muffin topp-ing” that could possibly occur thanks to those new baby pounds.

Four Things

Screen-Shot-2015-07-19-at-7.04.38-PM-440x130

Although I don’t usually do things like these, I do like reading them about others, and thought maybe all of you would like getting to know me a little better. Plus, the adorable Kristin of SuperSpaceChick.com nominated me to participate, so who am I to say no? 😉 There were a lot of questions, so I shortened it down to the ones I thought were most interesting and that I don’t tend to share here on the blog. I won’t nominate anyone, but I hope you all enjoy a little look into the Meli behind Melificent!

FOUR JOBS I’VE HAD

  • Receptionist at a law firm; My first dip into a job (away from my father’s business) was in a commercial real estate firm as a receptionist. Super exciting, right? I remember the office not having any windows at all. It was dark and cold and overall, the worst. However, thanks to my OCD, I became a little enamored with putting together closing packets and got really, really good at them. Silver lining, I guess?
  • Behavior technician; When I was about 18 years old, I took a job away from the law firm and working with kids on the spectrum for the very first time. I knew I wanted to major in psychology, but this job introduced me to the world of ABA and behavior analysis. I instantly fell in love and knew this was what I wanted to do. However, I had a very bad boss that took the wind out of my sails and made me question that decision after a couple of years…
  • Clinical coordinator; Which led me to go back to the realm of clinical psychology. I worked as a clinical coordinator at a therapeutic foster care agency for 5 years. It was so rewarding at first, and then the complete opposite. It was day in and day out of feeling like I was hitting a brick wall repeatedly and not making a difference in anyone’s lives despite working so hard to do so. I knew I needed a change and remembered how fulfilled I felt when I was working as a behavior tech with kids on the spectrum.
  • Behavior analyst; That led me to a complete career change. I went back to school, collected experience hours and and sat for 2 very grueling exams after the age of 30 to start working as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. I absolutely love what I do (even though it can be very stressful and frustrating at times), and it makes me feel like I am helping others on a daily basis – a feeling that really drives me.

FOUR THINGS I DON’T EAT

  • Anything with gluten; Through blood work in my late 20’s, I was diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. It has been a war ever since, trying to avoid it as best as possible despite being an extreme lover of all foods. I miss a whole lot of stuff and sometimes I cheat, but I’ve been squeaky clean since finding out I was pregnant 6 months ago. I fantasize about drinking all the beers and eating all the burgers.
  • Strawberries; I still felt sick even after doing blood work, so I decided to go for a comprehensive exam that tested my body’s reaction to over 300 different foods, chemicals and environmental factors. It turned out I was allergic to a whole slew of foods that can be found in basically…everything. Strawberries is one of them. Cue sad music.
  • Vanilla; This was also on my list – do you know how hard it is to avoid vanilla?? It’s basically in everything. It doesn’t help that this was categorized as being on my “severe” list, so I really can’t ingest it or my stomach goes into immediate rejection mode.
  • Lemonade; Aside from all my food intolerances and allergies, there are some things I just dislike (but very, very few). Lemonade is one of those things and I know that’s pretty weird. I just can’t stand the taste and find it entirely too bitter. However, I totally love Starbucks’ iced tea lemonade like there is no tomorrow. Who understands taste buds, amiright?

Pipsticks Review & Coupon Code

Processed with VSCOcam with c1 preset

I can’t tell you how much of a sticker fan I was when I was younger. I used to go to Publix with my dad for our weekly grocery trips and I would immediately run to the sticker racks. I was allowed to buy a couple of sheets a week to use on my scrapbooks, crafts, what have you. It literally made my day to see a new pack of adorable stickers – ones that were puffy, others that were scratch and sniff, and, of course, the coveted Garfield ones! That’s why I was so happy to get a package in the mail from Pipsticks, a monthly sticker subscription service.

I didn’t know what to expect when I ripped open the absolutely adorable packaging, but was so surprised to see the amount of goodies held inside! There were 15+ sheets or individual stickers included in my envelope, and some really fun postcards and one especially pertinent notecard that I plan on framing immediately. I like that the sticker sets varied from cute and kawaii to big and bold. They are perfect for fellow agenda freaks and crafters alike. I can’t wait to start using them to decorate what’s left of my 2015 Bando planner! They were also really unique and clearly expertly chosen. I loved the design aesthetic on basically everything.

If you are interested (& how could you not be), check out their 3 different clubs (they even have one dedicated especially for kids – how sweet) and enjoy free shipping if you are in the US! Even better? Check out my coupon code for all my readers: MEL 15 for 15% off any order!

The Unicorn Files

tumblr_inline_npbrsvxd4S1sxsr6e_500

I absolutely love the geek girl movement that is sweeping the Internets, whether it be in the form of blogs, like The Nerdy Girlie, or books, like The Fangirls Guide to the Galaxy. That’s why I was immediately drawn to The Unicorn Files project. The Unicorn Files is a photo book full of beautiful images taken of true geek girls in their natural environment: their homes. Its goal is to represent this community and expose others to the fact that geek girls, in fact, do exist and are a vital part of geek culture.

For that reason, I knew I had to contact the project’s creator, Terra Clarke Olsen, to get to know her and the project a little better. Check out what she had to say;

1. Can you tell us a little about your project, The Unicorn Files, and where you got the inspiration.

The idea came to me over two years ago at the height of the “fake geek girl” nonsense. After a year, I finally got the nerve to pitch the idea to Nate, and he loved it! “The Unicorn Files” is in reference to a term I resent being called (which I touch on in a Seattle Weekly article). Few months later and here we are!

What I Wore: Free Comic Book Day

T5616x3744-00028

I know it’s been a couple of weeks since Free Comic Book Day, but I hope all of you were able to participate and have a great time! I’m a little embarrassed to say that our favorite local comic book shop, Tate’s, had such an enormous line for free comics that we opted to just spend money in-store instead! We got some great toys, books and art, and I was even able to leave some Geek Girl Brunch flyers behind! Overall, it was a really great day and such an appropriate time to sport my new Harry Potter polo from 1138 Clothing.

This adorable top is often paired with a custom made house skirt, but my expanding mid-section did not allow me to pick up a matching skirt. All is well though. This keeps me and Luna open to all houses. 😉
