Being a new mama, I don’t have the time I used to. Perfect example is my salon adventures. Before I used to spend 4-6 hours at the salon every other month or so re-touching my ombre in whatever fashion color my little heart desired. I cannot afford to do that anymore (both in regards to time and finances), so I decided to be a little brave and do a thing. Namely, try to do my own ombre.
I got this idea from all my hours of watching YouTube lately (mainly from this video), and it looked pretty doable so I decided to give it a shot. Before I go into what I did, I must stress from the bottom of my little heart that I advise you go to a salon to get your ombre initially done. This was quick and dirty for me because my hair was already bleached by my amazing stylist. Please don’t try to bleach your hair into an ombre style on your own. I’ve seen some pretty scary results.
With that said, my materials were as follows:
- gloves
- hair clip
- comb
- headband for if you have bangs like me
- old tattered shirt you don’t care about (not pictured)
- squeeze bottle of Manic Panic in whichever color you desire (I used Amplified Hot Hot Pink)
- I would also add some sort of protective sheet to place under you and your bathroom counter – I made the most ridiculous mess
I recommend the squeeze bottle if you can because it’s easier to grip onto when your hands are covered in the dye. This being said, it still managed to slip out of my hand twice, sending sprays of hot pink all over the place. I even had to throw away my favorite bathroom mat. Tears.
The amplified line of Manic Panic just basically makes the color more vibrant (mine even glows in black light, although I have yet to test that). I covered all the areas that were bleached with copious amounts of the dye by sections and made sure to pull apart my hair as I did so to confirm that everything was saturated (those pesky little hairs love to hide). I would then comb the dye through each section until I was done. Then I put my hair in a bun and let it sit for an hour.
The worst part was probably washing it out because I had to take a cold shower. It is advised to rinse the dye out with cold water to retain the color, and I love me a hot shower, so it was pretty painful. However, I managed to go slowly enough to not make too much of a mess of my shower so hooray for that! When I popped out of the shower and quickly blow dried my hair, I was SO happy with the results!
The color is super radiant and fun. It went on evenly and hasn’t stained any of my pillowcases or sheets (& they are all white). At the time I wrote this post, I hadn’t done any additional washes yet, but we’ll see how long it lasts. Honestly, even if it only lasts one month, the whole process is so easy, it’s not really a bother. Plus, there are products like Overtone that could make your fashion colors last longer.
Overall, I absolutely love it. I also enjoy the fact that Manic Panic is so readily accessible and affordable that I can change my ombre color as often as I want (which is important for such a hair-fickle-person as myself). So if your ombre has faded and you are looking for a fun, fast and easy way to refresh it, I’d definitely give the Manic Panic way a try!
Hope this helped, guys!

Love it! Manic Panic seems to have such vibrant color. I’m always rather terrified to dye my own yet, but it’s so expensive at the salon!

That pink looks amazing! I have dark, dark brown hair and really want to dye it funky colours. But I never have the funds to get to a hairdressers and I’m too scared to bleach etc at home. Maybe one day. And then I’ll keep Manic Panic in mind to do it myself at home 🙂 x http://www.aimeeraindropwrites.co.uk x

I had green hair for a few months and did it myself. It is such a pain, but so rewarding. Sorry about the bath mat, but regarding the shower: toilet bowl cleaner might help reduce color stains in your bathtub. Silly and strange? Yes. But it should work. I use it against dye and hardwater stains.

I was pretty scared myself but it wasn’t as bad as anticipated!

Some colors will take to some lighter browns. You can always use a toner to get it lighter!

Oh man thx!
