Practical Ways to Stay Physically Active

Some people love going to the gym or going on a run simply because they love the act of exercising. For others, exercise can be boring or unpleasant – in these cases, it can be much harder to motivate oneself to be active.

A solution to this could be to find a dual purpose to exercise. Certain tasks can have practical benefits beyond helping you to stay fit – as a result, you may feel you’re getting more out of them. Below are just some of the practical ways to stay physically active.

Use cycling as a mode of transport

Cycling to places locally instead of taking your car can save you money on fuel and keep you fit. It’s faster than walking, so you also won’t feel as if you’re wasting as much time (in some areas with heavy traffic, cycling may even be quicker than driving at certain times of the day). If you haven’t already got a bike, consider investing in one.

Incorporate exercise into housework

Household chores like vacuuming, mopping and scrubbing can be very physically exertive. Instead of using up your free time to exercise, consider combining exercise into your housework schedule. Posts such as this one at Whotsonni explain various ways in which you can turn housework into a workout by combining exercises like squats and bicep curls into cleaning tasks. You’ll stay fit and your home will stay tidy in the process.

Take on DIY projects at home

Certain DIY projects can also be physically intensive. This is particularly the case with outdoor projects like laying a patio, digging a pond or building a shed. Even moving furniture can be a way to get some weight training into your day. Consider physically active DIY projects that you’ve been meaning to take on and use them as an opportunity for a workout.

Try self defence classes

You never know when you may need self defence. The likes of Krav Maga and martial arts can teach you how to defend yourself while often also providing a workout. If you’ve been interested in learning some self defence, consider looking into classes in your area. You’ll build essential skills, meet new people and stay fit.

Prioritize play time with kids and petsPlaying with kids and pets is so important for their health and wellbeing as well as your own. It can also be a great opportunity to get some exercise into your day. When thinking of different ways to spend time with your kids, consider physically active games and activities. This could include going on walks, going on bike trips, dancing with kids, playing football or playing games in the park. If you’ve got a pet such as a dog, this could also be a great chance to incorporate exercise into your day. Plan long walks with your dog and play games like tug of war and fetch – you’ll be spending quality time with your dog while staying physically active..
