If there is one thing that makes an outfit it is the accessories. Choosing something that suits your taste and style is always more important than choosing something that is on-trend. Choosing accessories can be much more difficult than choosing the outfit – most of the time, unless you’re already well versed in how to make things pop and work – it can be tricky!
Like with everything to do with fashion, you might not get everything right the first time – or even the 27th. Eventually though, choosing the right belt and scarf combo will become second nature. In the meantime, we have the pros from shows like Queer Eye, and glossy magazines to guide us.

Matching
For years one of the biggest things was having all of your accessories matching. But actually, they don’t need to match at all! Having your accessories matching can make any outfit feel more conservative, and if that is what you are going for then great! Mixing and matching textures and colors can take some time.
Once you have an outfit idea, play around with some accessories in different styles and colors until you find a combination that works.
Transformation
You probably won’t be taking a bag of extra accessories with you to work or on a day out to change for the night – you might have 15 minutes to get home, get ready, and leave again. A daytime outfit, something simple like a dress, and quickly go from day to night based on the accessories. Keep in mind that accessories aren’t just jewelry and handbags – it’s your shoes too!
A simple black day dress can go from day to night with some unique gold jewelry, going from ballet pumps to heels or biker boots and a small cross-body bag.
Signature
If you are just getting into style or looking for your personal style, it can take a while – but there is one thing you can do to make it a little easier on yourself. Find a statement piece that you can use as your signature – and then over time find other items that work with it.
A necklace usually makes a great option for a signature accessory as they go with pretty much any outfit. After a while use your signature piece to get used to wearing accessories, practice layering, bold blocks of colors, and more.
Pops and patterns
If you don’t wear many bright colors in your clothing, so perhaps you stick to blacks, navy, and some other neutral colors, patterns and bright pops of colors can give you a bit of an edge. Simple black outfits can be elevated with patterned chunky jewelry or delicate layered chains and necklaces.
No pressure
Instead of putting pressure on yourself to get it right every time, leave yourself room to make some fashion mistakes, try clashing colors and styles, and experiment in any way that makes you feel happy.
Remove the pressure to get everything perfect, and instead think about having fun with your clothing and style!
