Life with Luna: SwankyShank

IMG_6802

I absolutely love finding new shops for Luna. I’m really picky with the way I dress her and have entirely too much fun styling her in the morning (yes, it is styling and not dressing). She used to hate getting dressed, but I notice that she’s gotten much more used to it these days. She even stared totally enraptured when my best friend was showing me her baby’s newest outfits. I think I may slowly be creating a monster that will buy me out of house and home. 😉

With that said, I like unique and fun pieces that show personality because lets face it: they are kids! If their clothes aren’t fun now, then when! That’s why I totally dug Swanky Shank when I discovered their shop on Etsy. It really stood out to me because their pieces were so kitschy, and their scripted slogans were so beautiful! Plus, their store header states that they make clothes for the free spirit – and that’s exactly what I want to raise. My free-spiritedness (word? yes?) was definitely stifled as a child coming from a Latin family in a very conservative city (yes, Miami is conservative). Now as an adult is when I’m really “letting my freak flag fly,” but I don’t want Luna to ever think she has to bottle that up.

What I Wore: Space Princess

DSCF5860

My style has slowly been evolving now as I’ve become a mom. I’ve realized some pieces that I used to rock on the daily no longer work for my new lifestyle. I often have to be carrying an infant, changing her on the fly and generally bending over a whole lot. This means I can’t really afford short skirts or too tight anything. A lot of fandom skirts tend to be of this variety, which is why I jumped at the chance to review the new knee-length style that will be offered in skirts at one of my favorite Etsy shops, UtinniBikini. I spent this entire day running around town with Luna in tow: from brunch to cocktails, and I never once felt uncomfortable in my clothes. This speaks volumes to a new mom whose body is currently in flux. I also love that you will eventually be able to get these skirts in any of her amazing fabrics so the options will be {nearly} limitless. I, of course, had to choose the galaxy AT-AT’s because…well, just look at it. It’s flipping amazing.

Turtleneck; Uniqlo {similar}
Skirt; UtinniBikini
Hat; Forever 21 {similar}
Boots; Forever 21 {similar}

If you are interested in being a “guinea pig” for UtinniBikini’s new items as well, hit her up on Etsy. She’s currently looking for ladies to model more of these knee length skirts and crop topped sweaters!

Sailor Moon Favs

SMfavs

collage

If you have followed me for any amount of time, you know that I am a big Sailor Moon fan. I grew up on the original anime, and found it to be…without sounding lame, really magical. It was pretty amazing to see such powerful ladies fighting off the bad guys (while looking great), and things haven’t really changed since. I may be in the minority (people love to complain), but I adore Sailor Moon Crystal and am finally looking to read the manga. All in all, it is one of my favorite fandoms and I’m so excited Geek Girl Brunch will be hosting a Sailor Moon themed brunch later this month (squee)! I’ve got my cosplay ready to go (I’ll be featuring it here on the blog), but I figured I’d post a little round up of my favorite Sailor Moon-inspired goodies from around the Interwebs because who doesn’t love a magical girl?

Moon Prism Power….MAKE UP!

Row 2: Magical Girl necklace | Artemis Brooch

My Geeky Valentine

I know a lot of you tout Valentine’s Day as a commercialized and ridiculous holiday. When I was single, I hated it. When I was in relationships, I hated it. It’s only now, as an old lady fart that I have grown to appreciate this holiday about love. Because it’s all around us, people. It doesn’t have to be romantic love – just a day to appreciate all the love surrounding you. Because trust me, every single one of us is circled by amazing people and animals that love us as much as we do them. So take the time out to step back and give thanks to the universe for that because it’s pretty special.

And aside from that, you get to wear pink! And hearts! The 14th really could be worse, amirite? Here’s my round up of pretty amazing geek-centric Valentine’s goodies;

vday

Moon of my life tank | Galentine’s Day card | Fictional character brooch
Parks & Rec wall hanging | Pixel heart clutch
Spooky Mulder pin | Star Wars pillowcases | Harry Potter brooch boyfriend

Life with Luna: There’s Still Good in the World

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

I fell in love with a certain shop on Etsy, Strangeways Studios. I’ve featured them several times on this blog for their adorable fandom baby onesies. I got Luna’s Christmas day onesie from them, and they sent me a few more onesies and goodies without me asking. So sweet! I’ve featured some of those as well if you remember. A few weeks pass, and they tell me they’ve sent me a little surprise that was inspired by my little Lulu bug. When I received the package, my eyes swelled with tears.

They had designed a onesie that will be sold in their store with the opening lyrics to Luna, the Smashing Pumpkins song I named my daughter after! We had discussed the reason behind the name in a conversation beforehand, and I was so happy that owner recognized the song, as not many people do. It was so absolutely touching. In fact, once Luna grows out of it, I’m pretty sure I’m going to shadowbox it.

I guess the reason I decided to share this story is because so many terrible and heartbreaking things are happening in the world on an everyday basis. Sometimes it’s pretty easy to let that black cloud consume you. However, every now and then, a little light shines through that dark cloud that changes your mind completely. There are still good people in this world, and to quote American Beauty, sometimes there is so much beauty in the world, I feel like I can’t take it.

So thank you, Strangeways Studios, for being that bright little sunbeam that forced its way from out of the clouds and into my life.
