Megacon Orlando and I? We have history.
My first Megacon was in 2014, just a brief month or so after I suffered a miscarriage. I cried the way up to Orlando because I felt guilty for doing something “fun,” but then quickly realized it was just what I needed. The convention scene and I have always been allies, a place I feel safe and at home in. Somewhere where I feel I can be myself without judgement. I had quite a lot of that fun I was feeling guilty for experiencing and met some lifelong friends. For this, it has always stayed in my heart.
It was only natural that Luna’s first convention be Mega, and it was last year. I had my reservations about how she would take it, but she was such a champ. Not many two year olds can say that their first celebrity encounter was Jeff Goldblum while dressed like Queen Elsa. Just sayin’.
So this year I knew we would have a great time, and what a flipping gift: David Tennant would be there. In case you didn’t know, he’s kinda my favorite ever, and I have indoctrinated my child into knowing who he is because of all the POP figures, fan art and hanging rearview mirror likenesses I have of him all over my living space, and well…life. She was so cute I couldn’t take it {see here}, although I did have to bribe her to smile in our photo op with her Minnie Mouse costume for Disney later that day {I regret nothing}.
Aside from that magical moment {why are photo ops so ridiculously quick?}, Luna was able to meet some of her favorite heroes and recognize a lot more cosplays than I thought possible. We spent most of our time in artist alley connecting with some of our favorite artists and discovering new ones. I think what I love the most about this convention is that it has the heart and feel of a small con while having a lot of the perks of a large one, like amazing vendors and guests (choosing between Zachary Levi and David Tennant was straight up hell, people). It’s also so kid friendly and has the added bonus of being a short car ride from the most magical place on Earth, which has to be the best possible convention after party location.
There are some things I am bummed I missed out on because mom life, but the ones that hurt the most was the MMC reunion hosted by Joey Fatone and the Boy Meets World reunion. Everything about it screamed Meli-specific nostalgia, and I hope I get the chance to experience one of these amazing things again down the line being the ultimate 90’s fangirl that I am.
Overall, my love for Megacon continues and I don’t see the fire dimming any time soon. I feel so lucky that we have such an amazing con so close to home, especially those years that I don’t attend SDCC. If you are remotely in the area, I would definitely check it out {and hang out with us}.
Look out for an outfit post soon detailing my Mega Whovian look (har har).
