Museum of Ice Cream Miami

I’m sure this post needs no introduction. By now you have heard of The Museum of Ice Cream that is taking the States by storm. It’s a candy colored tribute to everyone’s favorite dessert (wait, what do you mean, it’s not everyone’s favorite?), and has turned into a Instagram sensation. Basically, it is so up my speed that it made me come out of hiding (kidding – not really?).

The hubs packed up his favorite camera, and we went on a very quick date night to visit the “museum” (it’s really an art exhibit) and then head right back home. I have to give him a huge high five for these shots. He nailed each and every one, and we still managed to have a blast together despite some long lines, obnoxious Instagrammers and “the rush” we now feel as parents to get back home.

The experience started off by getting your “ice cream fortune” read by this lovely little lady, and then you were on your way to 4 floors of different pastel colored rooms – each perfectly styled to make your Instagram shots look flawless. You also occasionally got some ice cream – none of which I could enjoy because – surprise! – I’m allergic to vanilla and that ish is in everything. No joke. But lets face it. No one was there for the actual ice cream.

I was pretty in love with my outfit for the event. I shopped on Nasty Gal for the first time during a killer after Christmas sale (still happening omg), and I am so freaking obsessed with their clothes and quality now. Consider me a loyal customer for life. I wanted to wear something that was fun, but that at the same time wouldn’t take away from the colorful backdrops. I think I did a pretty good job.

Lincoln’s Beard Brewery: Recess Event

As a parent, you often want to partake in all the fun, but know bringing the toddlers along is just going to ruin said fun. You see, I have a very active almost-two-year-old that likes to run free, exploring and tearing from any form of hand holding or restrictive chairs (eating out is no longer an option). That’s why my ears perked up when I heard that a local brewery, Lincoln’s Beard, would be hosting a monthly child-friendly event called Recess. I attended my first this past weekend and it was so great! Sure, the weather was stifling (hello August in Miami!) and I was sweating from every orifice in my body, but seeing how happy Luna was to run around more than made up for it.

The event allowed parents to drink the brewery’s beers (responsibly) while socializing and munching on some excellent food trucks (Taco and Tattoos’ Tako Krew and Mr. PB+J), and gave the kids plenty to do too (without getting in too much trouble). Luna was especially mesmerized by the bubble machine, the Jenga pieces and dancing to the DJ’s tunes. There were also kid-friendly vendors sprinkled around the brewery that catered to the kiddo’s interests. Despite the 90+ temperatures, Luna stayed and partied for a little over 2 hours, and I have to say that I can’t wait for next month’s events. I am highly appreciative of businesses that realize parent life is hard, and plan events to make it less so.

Some constructive criticisms?

  • Changing table needed! They used a pack and play as the changing station, which gave me the heebie jeebies. BUT they sectioned off the entire upstairs of the brewery for breastfeeding, which is wonderful. I changed Luna up there instead.
  • More activities! Luna is used to going to daycare and entertaining herself with everything and anything. She’s a curious kiddo. But it would have been nice to have even more activities for the kids aside from Chalk, hula hoops, Uno, Jenga and a bubble machine. Maybe a water play station to beat the heat? Even sprinklers! Ball pits, etc.
  • The music was a little too loud (for kids).
  • Making that specific event non-smoking would have been nice.
  • Some more outdoor fans for the patio area because man, is it hot.

Do any of you guys know of more kid-friendly events in South Florida? Luna loves to go out but sometimes it’s difficult to find toddler-appropriate outings in this city!

Hatch Miami

After a long time of contemplating it, I finally took the plunge and decided to participate as a vendor at a local fair. My fellow Geek Girl Brunch Miami officers got accepted as vendors into Hatch Miami, which is a fair targeted at supporting local women in the city. You had to be a woman to be accepted into the event, and when I decided to participate, not only as a Geek Girl Brunch officer, but also as a business owner for Geek Girl Gang, I had no idea how positive the experience would be.

It was so refreshing and inspiring to be around other creatives. And not only creatives, but women. It felt like a big supportive family. I was able to meet some people I had never seen outside of social media, and make some new friendships as well with a lot of talented ladies. It made me more confident about my decision to open the shop back up and feed this creative monster within me. I can’t wait to soldier forward with new ideas and a surer mindset.

Although I’m not sure when the next event will be, I strongly urge you to keep your eyes peeled and attend if you are a South Florida local!

Anjolee + Date Night

We realized sometime last month that our last date day/night was in the summer! When you are parents, things start to add up and before you know it, months have passed by since you have had a nice time for yourself. It’s so important to keep going out on dates and enjoy your partner even when there is a tiny one around, so the hubs and I try to do so as often as possible. Unfortunately, this time around, life got the best of us.

We decided to head out to celebrate the hubs’ birthday and make our best attempt at being cool. We had tapas at a Brazilian restaurant and then went bar hopping. My favorite bar we stopped at? The Anderson. Although I’m sure it gets slammed and full of hipsters, it was so nice to visit on a Sunday afternoon. I totally appreciated the tropical Miami vibe complete with swinging hammocks and brightly colored walls. The cocktails were also to die for, so that helps.

Hello Kitty Cafe Truck: Miami

img_1939
The Hello Kitty Cafe truck made its way to Miami this past weekend and for a split second, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to go! I just registered Luna in daycare (sniff sniff), and they were holding an open house the same day and at the same time I was going to be visiting the truck. I had to adult at that moment and chose having Luna meet her teachers and classmates over kawaii time. But! Luna was in such good spirits after such a long and busy day, that we decided to take our chances and head over there in the early evening. It was such a great decision!
